Growing up, my grandmother always used to have cans of Vernors ginger ale around the house. My favourite thing to do when I got a glass of it would be to take a big whiff of the intensely peppery smell of it. It would almost always make me sneeze.
That smell was one of the inspirations for this recipe. We used a hint of black pepper and bird's eye chili to bring out the natural flavours of the ginger that often get lost when it becomes a beverage. Couple that with some lemon, and you’ve got yourself one dynamite drink syrup.
Throw a splash in soda water and it’s a homemade lemon-ginger ale.
