We’ve had a pretty serious hankering for some Latin flavours lately. That being said, we really wanted to stay away from doing another taco box. So we started doing some research and experimentation to find the right fit. Thankfully Anna and I have a good friend from Venezuela who provided some much needed inspiration.
We finally settled on arepas, as they fit right in what we like to call our sweet spot (a familiar base point that we use to highlight different and unique flavours). If you’ve never had arepas before, they’re almost like a cross between a taco, hamburger, and pancake. In short, they’re delicious. They’re found in many different forms and varieties depending on where you go in South America, but they’re a mainstay in Venezuelan cuisine. If you have tried them before, you probably aren’t reading this, because we already had you at “arepas.”
Cornflour dough seared on a cast iron griddle, these tasty little morsels make for the perfect build-your-own Venezuelan dining experience.
Pollo Mechado (Venezuelan Pulled Chicken)
Charcoal grilled chicken that is hand shredded and tossed with freshly sauteed tomatoes and fire roasted red peppers. It’s incredible.
Garlic Lime Charcoal Grilled Shrimp
We take whole shrimp, and cook them right in a bed of charcoal to provide an unmatched flavour. They’re then chilled, peeled, sliced, and tossed with lime and roasted garlic.
Caraotas Negras (Black Beans)
Venezuelan slow cooked black beans.
Avocado & Crema Slaw
Guasacaca is Venezuela’s version of guacamole, and is smoother than guacamole and uses parsley as opposed to cilantro. We’ve discovered that when combined with crema, it makes quite possibly the best slaw dressing we’ve ever had.
Tomatillo Salsa A tangy green salsa made from tomatillos, lime, and cilantro
Whipped Queso Fresco Fresh Mexican cheese, grated and whipped. It’s the perfect topping.
Quesillio is basically a Venezuelan version of creme caramel made with dulce de leche. It will be your new favourite dessert.
Jackfruit Mechado (Vegetarian Alternate)
Jackfruit is one of the best vegetarian alternatives to pulled pork. We’ve taken our barbeque pulled jackfruit recipe and tweaked it to match the flavour in the pollo mechado. Shredded Jackfruit with fire roasted red peppers and sauteed tomato.
